How we calculate it
The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) sets an adequate total water intake of 2.0 litres a day for women and 2.5 litres for men, counting water from drinks and from food, at moderate temperatures and activity. PixNutri turns this into a personal drinking goal from your body weight: about 33 ml per kg, plus 500 ml if you are active, kept between 1.5 and 4 litres. That per-kg rule is our own estimate, not an EFSA formula.
What the result means
You need more in hot weather and with long or intense exercise, since EFSA's values assume moderate conditions. EFSA also adds about 300 ml a day during pregnancy and about 700 ml when breastfeeding. If your doctor has told you to limit fluids, follow their advice.
Questions
Do coffee and tea count?
Yes. EFSA's reference values count water from drinks of all kinds, and from food.
Do I really need 8 glasses a day?
Eight 250 ml glasses make 2 litres, the EFSA total for women. Your own amount depends on your size and activity, which is why the calculator adjusts it.
Does water from food count?
Yes. The EFSA values include water from food, so fruit, vegetables, soups and yogurt all contribute.
