Calorie calculator
Find how many calories you need each day to lose, maintain or gain weight.
Your result
- To maintain your weight
- 2,060 kcal
- Resting energy (BMR)
- 1,502 kcal
Kept at the minimum of 1,200 kcal a day for weight loss.
For your body and activity level, eating less than this isn't advised without medical guidance, so this target keeps your weight steady. Talk to a doctor or registered dietitian before trying to lose weight.
Estimates for healthy adults, not medical advice.
How we calculate it
First we estimate your resting energy expenditure (BMR) with the Mifflin-St Jeor equation, from your sex, age, height and weight. We multiply it by an activity factor from 1.2 to 1.725 to get the calories you burn in a day. To lose weight we subtract 500 kcal a day, a deficit the NHLBI guidelines link to losing about 0.5 kg (1 lb) a week, and we never go below 1,200 kcal for women or 1,500 kcal for men. To build muscle we add 300 kcal. These are the same formulas the PixNutri app uses.
What the result means
It is an estimate for healthy adults. Real needs can differ by a few hundred calories, so treat it as a starting point: follow your weight for two weeks and adjust gradually. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, under 18 or have a medical condition, ask a doctor or registered dietitian.
Questions
How many calories should I eat to lose weight?
Choose "Lose weight": the result already includes a 500 kcal daily deficit, which the NHLBI guidelines link to losing about 0.5 kg (1 lb) a week. Eating much less is harder to sustain and makes it harder to get enough protein and nutrients.
Why is my result different from other calculators?
Calculators use different equations and activity factors. We use the Mifflin-St Jeor equation and the same four activity levels as the PixNutri app, so the site and the app give you the same number.
Should I eat back the calories I burn exercising?
Your activity level already includes your usual training. In the PixNutri app, if you connect Apple Health or Health Connect, half of the active calories you burn is added to that day's goal, up to a limit.
