How we calculate it
BMI is your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²). The World Health Organization uses it to classify adults: below 18.5 is underweight, 25 or more is overweight and 30 or more is obesity.
What the result means
BMI is a quick screening number, not a diagnosis. WHO calls it an indirect marker of body fat: it cannot tell muscle from fat, so muscular people can score high, and children and teenagers are assessed differently. Waist size and a check-up with your doctor give a fuller picture.
Questions
What is a healthy BMI?
For adults, the WHO categories put a healthy weight between 18.5 and 24.9.
Is BMI accurate for athletes?
Not always. BMI only uses height and weight, so people with a lot of muscle can have a high BMI without excess body fat.
Does BMI work for children?
Not with the adult categories. For people aged 5 to 19, WHO uses BMI-for-age growth references instead.
